Frequently Asked Questions

I am interested in wingsuiting but I don’t have 200 jumps yet. Is there anything I can do to prepare?

We recommend doing as many skydives of different types as you can. Anything that gets you out of your comfort zone and helps you build body awareness is great! We have people who show up having only done solo tracking dives for 100 jumps and they are less likely to succeed than those who have done group jumps, organized jumps, jumps where they got unstable and recovered, and coaching of any kind. Tunnel flying also helps.

My bridle is less than 7 feet. Can I still do the First Flight Course?

We require that you have a bridle 7 feet or longer to learn to wingsuit with us. We take your safety very seriously, and as wingsuits have evolved, our gear requirements must keep pace. We highly recommend the Squirrel SkySnatch in either the 26-inch (for smaller canopies) or 30-inch sizes, which both come with an 8-foot bridle. These pilot chutes can also be used for any other type of skydiving you do, and greatly reduce the risk of a pilot chute in tow.

My pilot chute is less than 28 inches in diameter and it's not a Squirrel SkySnatch. Can I still do the First Flight Course?

We require that if you are jumping a standard pilot chute design (i.e. one from your manufacturer) that it be 28-30 inches in diameter, in excellent condition, and with a lightweight handle in order to learn to wingsuit with us. We take your safety very seriously, and as wingsuits have evolved, our gear requirements must keep pace. We highly recommend the Squirrel SkySnatch in either the 26-inch (for smaller canopies) or 30-inch sizes, which both come with an 8-foot bridle. I don’t have the right main canopy to start wingsuiting. What are my options?

You can wait to start wingsuiting until you have the right gear. Or, we offer Performance Designs Horizon canopies as free demos to our First Flight Course students during the course. This ultralight, wingsuit specific canopy packs easily into containers at least one size smaller, allowing you to upsize for a lighter wing loading (recommended 1.3: 1 or lower). At our Skydive Perris and Skydive Elsinore locations we have the following sizes available on risers, ready to jump: 120, 135, 150, 170, 190.

Can I rent or borrow gear to wingsuit?

You can rent and demo wingsuits and main canopies from Lighting Flight. We provide the latest Squirrel models to rent for beginner and intermediate progression (we do not have big, high-performance suits for rent). We also provide Performance Designs Horizon canopies, based on availability, for free use during coaching.

You will need to provide your own helmet, visual and audible altimeters, harness/container system with in-date reserve and working AAD, and approved bridle and pilot chute (when jumping your own wingsuit-appropriate canopy).

How strict is the currency requirement of 40 jumps in the last 2 months to start wingsuiting?

Currency is one of the most important factors in our students' success, so rather than seeing it as a rule, think of it as our best advice for you to get the most out of your coaching. If you are not current, you are starting out at a disadvantage, so we would prefer that you do some jumps at the dropzone you'll be training at before you start paying us to instruct you. It usually ends up saving time and money and improving your overall experience.

I can’t afford $350 for a day of coaching to learn to wingsuit. Is there a cheaper option?

In our experience, it is a more efficient use of time and money when students commit to a full day of one-on-one jumps with a coach when they’re starting out. It is also the safest way for us to clear you for solos. We are committed to graduating safe, independent wingsuit flyers from our program. That requires an investment from our students, and those who have jumped with us agree that it’s worth it.

I want to rent a wingsuit for multiple days. Are there any discounts available?

We are not a long-term wingsuit rental company, but we do want to help you stay in the air! The cost to rent a wingsuit is $20 per jump or $50 per day. If you purchase 5 full days of Squirrel Swift rental up front, we offer a 20% discount. The good news is that we are a Squirrel dealership, and Squirrel delivers brand new wingsuits within 5-6 weeks and often even more quickly. We will be happy to measure you, help with suit choice, and work with you to place an order.

Do you give any discounts when buying a new wingsuit through Lightning Flight?

We cannot offer discounts on new wingsuits. What we can do is measure you, consult on suit choice, help place your order, and answer questions during any part of the process (including if you have any fit or sizing issues upon delivery). We do announce occasional demo sales through our Facebook page, so if you’re in the market for a used wingsuit, keep an eye out.
